What is recovery like after a hammertoe tenotomy?
Short answer: Tenotomy is commonly a small-incision, same-day procedure. Walking is usually permitted in appropriate postoperative footwear, with dressings, elevation and activity adjusted to the individual case.
After local anaesthesia, the tight tendon is released through a small entry point and the change in toe position is checked. Because no joint is fused, the procedure is relatively limited when used for the right deformity.
Soreness and swelling are expected. The skin opening may heal quickly, but internal tissues still need time. Return to shoes, work and exercise depends on wound healing, swelling, occupation and any additional procedure.
