Small sensory nerves cross the operative area and can be stretched, bruised, trapped in scar tissue or less commonly divided. Symptoms may gradually settle as swelling and nerve irritation improve. A painful neuroma or persistent neuropathic pain may require targeted treatment.
Assessment should identify the distribution of symptoms and distinguish nerve pain from joint, bone, hardware or circulation problems. Management can include observation, desensitisation, medication, diagnostic injection, scar treatment or surgery in carefully selected cases.
Protect numb skin from heat, pressure and friction.
Report progressive sensory loss or weakness.
Do not repeatedly massage a highly irritable nerve without guidance.
Persistent burning pain deserves review rather than reassurance alone.
How long can numbness last?
Minor sensory change can improve over weeks or months. The prognosis depends on whether the nerve was compressed, stretched, scarred or structurally injured.
