13. When should bunion surgery be considered?
When symptoms meaningfully restrict footwear, walking, work or activity and appropriate non-surgical measures have not provided acceptable relief. The expected benefit must justify the recovery and risks.
14. Should I have surgery before the bunion becomes severe?
Not routinely if it is comfortable and functional. Earlier surgery may be reasonable in selected symptomatic cases, but operating on an asymptomatic bunion to prevent uncertain progression exposes the patient to definite surgical risk for a hypothetical future benefit.
15. Is bunion surgery cosmetic surgery?
Its main purpose is pain relief and functional improvement. Appearance commonly improves, but surgery should not be recommended solely to fit narrower fashion shoes or achieve a perfectly straight-looking toe.
