Patients with bunions on both feet often ask whether both sides can be corrected at the same time. In selected cases this may be possible, but it is not automatically the most convenient or safest option.

The potential advantage is a single anaesthetic and one overall recovery period. The disadvantage is that both feet are healing simultaneously, which can make transfers, stairs, showering and daily activities more difficult. The patient must also manage swelling and postoperative footwear on both sides.

The decision depends on the type of operation, expected weight-bearing status, general health, home environment and available support. Patients who live alone, have balance problems or cannot safely manage mobility aids may be better served by staged procedures.

For some people, correcting the more symptomatic foot first provides useful information about recovery before deciding whether and when to treat the other side.
