How long does recovery take after hammertoe surgery?

Short answer: Recovery depends on whether treatment involves tendon release, keyhole bone remodelling, arthroplasty or fusion. Swelling commonly lasts longer than the skin wound, and return to ordinary shoes, driving, work and sport must be individualised.

Postoperative care may include a surgical shoe, elevation, dressings, protected walking and follow-up imaging. The goal is a practical correction with the least disruptive appropriate operation—not a fixed recovery promise.

Treatment planning is shared. The likely benefit, limitations, alternatives, recovery demands and risks are discussed before consent, including the option of continuing non-surgical care.
