What shoes are best for hammertoes?

Short answer: Shoes with a deep, wide toe box, soft upper and secure fastening can reduce rubbing over a bent toe. A low, stable heel helps avoid pushing the foot forward into the toe box.

The shoe should provide both width and depth; simply buying a longer shoe may allow sliding without relieving pressure. Stretchable uppers, removable insoles and appropriately positioned seams can improve comfort.

Footwear cannot reliably straighten a fixed deformity, but it can substantially reduce irritation and may help delay or avoid surgery when symptoms are mild.
